Finnish runners Ville Ritola and Paavo Nurmi, 1928. Ritola (1896-1982) won five Olympic gold medals and three Olympic silver medals. Nurmi (1897-1973) won nine gold and three silver medals in twelve events in the Olympic Games. At the 1928 Summer Olympics, held in Amsterdam, Ritola won gold in the mens 5, 000 metres, and Nurmi won gold in the mens 10, 000 metres.
