Bolingbrokes False Homage to Richard II. at Flint Castle, 1836. Henry Bolingbroke kneels before King Richard II at Flint Castle in Wales. After being banished and disinherited by the King, Henry Bolingbroke (c1366-1413), Duke of Lancaster, returned to England with an army and usurped the throne while Richard (1367-1400) was in Ireland. On his return to England, Richard was captured at Flint in 1399, taken to the Tower of London and forced to abdicate. Bolingbroke then declared himself King Henry IV
