Under The Arch

31st January 1948: Two children walking in the Gorbals area of Glasgow. The Gorbals tenements were built quickly and cheaply in the 1840s, providing housing for Glasgows burgeoning population of industrial workers. Conditions were appalling; overcrowding was standard and sewage and water facilities inadequate. The tenements housed about 40, 000 people with up to eight family members sharing a single room, 30 residents sharing a toilet and 40 sharing a tap. By the time this photograph was taken 850 tenements had been demolished since 1920. Redevelopment of the area began in the late 1950s and the tenements were replaced with a modern tower block complex in the sixties. Under The Arch - A Glimpse into the Forgotten Gorbals

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This photo print, captured by Roger Wood on January 31st, 1948, takes us back in time to the impoverished streets of the Gorbals area in Glasgow. Two children can be seen walking under an archway, their silhouettes contrasting against the stark backdrop of tenement buildings. The Gorbals tenements were hastily constructed in the 1840s to accommodate Glasgow's growing population of industrial workers. However, these structures soon became synonymous with appalling living conditions. Overcrowding was rampant, with up to eight family members crammed into a single room. Basic amenities like sewage and water facilities were woefully inadequate for the approximately 40,000 residents who called these tenements home. By the time this photograph was taken, efforts had already been made to demolish around 850 tenements since 1920. Redevelopment plans began in the late 1950s and eventually gave way to modern tower blocks that replaced these dilapidated dwellings during the sixties. Wood's image serves as a poignant reminder of a bygone era marked by hardship and struggle but also resilience and hope for better days ahead. It captures not only a moment frozen in time but also sheds light on an important chapter in Glasgow's history – one that witnessed both despair and progress. As we gaze upon this thought-provoking piece from Fine Art Storehouse today, let us reflect on how far we have come while acknowledging that there is still work to be done towards creating inclusive communities where every individual has access to decent housing and improved living conditions.
