The Development of Printing

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that takes us back to the late 16th century, showcasing the revolutionary process of book printing. This plate from Nova Reperta (New Discoveries) beautifully captures the intricate steps involved in producing printed materials. On the left side of the image, we see three diligent compositors meticulously assembling pieces of type into lines of text. These types are stored in wooden cases and carefully selected to create coherent sentences. Once arranged, these lines are locked into a framework known as a chase, forming what is called a forme. In the background, an experienced pressman applies ink to the letters using precision and skill. Another pressman can be seen pulling a lever to increase pressure on the platen, ensuring clear and legible impressions on each page. Amidst this bustling scene stands a proofreader wearing glasses who attentively checks every printed proof for errors or imperfections. Their meticulous eye ensures that only flawless copies make their way into readers' hands. This historical artwork not only pays homage to influential figures like Johannes Gutenberg and Christophe Plantin but also highlights the significance of apprenticeship and learning in this transformative era for publishing. "The Development of Printing" serves as a reminder of how far we have come in our journey through technological advancements while appreciating those early pioneers who laid down the foundation for modern-day printing methods.
