EDITORS COMMENTS
This oil on canvas print, titled "Parade of the Black Sea Fleet in 1849" showcases a remarkable moment in naval history. Painted by Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky, this masterpiece captures the grandeur and power of the Russian fleet during that era. The focal point of the painting is undoubtedly the imposing 120-gun Twelve Apostles ship, leading the line with its modern design and formidable armament. Behind it, we can see other impressive vessels such as Rostislav, Svyatoslav, Yagudiil, Tri Svyatitelya, Gavriil, Selafail, and Uriil. These ships represent both strength and elegance as they sail through the Black Sea waters. On deck stands an illustrious group of officers who command attention: Emperor Nicolas I himself takes center stage alongside Rear-Admiral Kornilov (Head of the Fleet Staff), Grand Duke Constantine (the Emperor's brother), Rear-Admiral Berkh (Commander of Sebastopol naval base), and Admiral Lazarev (Commander of the Fleet). Their presence adds a sense of authority to this majestic scene. As we observe this historic parade from afar, we are reminded not only of Russia's naval might but also its rich maritime tradition. The sailors diligently man their posts while spectators marvel at this display from various vantage points along the shore. This extraordinary artwork serves as a testament to Aivazovsky's talent for capturing dramatic seascapes and his ability to immortalize significant moments in history. It allows us to delve into Russia's naval past while appreciating both artistic mastery and historical significance simultaneously.
