EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Plate 521. A, Walking; B, Ascending Step; C, Throwing Disk" captures a moment frozen in time by the renowned photographer Eadweard Muybridge. Taken between 1872 and 1885 as part of his groundbreaking series "Animal Locomotion" this collotype print showcases Muybridge's pioneering work in early motion picture sequences. The image depicts a sequence of actions performed by a male figure. In the first frame (A), we see him walking with purpose and determination. The second frame (B) shows him ascending a step, showcasing both strength and agility. Finally, in the third frame (C), he is captured mid-action as he throws a disk with precision and grace. Muybridge's scientific approach to photography revolutionized our understanding of movement and human locomotion. His meticulous study of sequential frames provided invaluable insights into how our bodies move through space. In this particular print, we observe an elderly man with a long beard engaging in these physical activities. His nakedness adds vulnerability to the scene while emphasizing the focus on movement rather than personal identity or social conventions. Displayed at the Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover, Massachusetts, this artwork serves as both an artistic masterpiece and an important scientific document from the late 19th century. It continues to inspire contemporary artists and researchers alike who seek to explore the intricacies of human motion through visual storytelling.
