EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white artwork captures the enigmatic figure of Ferdinand de Geramb, a man whose identity is shrouded in mystery. Born in 1772, he was believed to be a French aristocrat, although this claim remains disputed. The portrait showcases his striking features - a meticulously groomed moustache and curly hair framing his face. De Geramb's life took him on an extraordinary journey that spanned across different realms. He began as a soldier, serving his country with honor and bravery. However, at some point during his military career, he experienced a profound spiritual awakening that led him to renounce worldly pursuits. The image portrays de Geramb later in life when he became a Trappist monk. This radical transformation from soldier to devout religious figure is captured beautifully within the frame.
