The game was also intended as a warm-up for the 1986 British Lions tour to South Africa, but this was subsequently cancelled due to controversy over the apartheid government in the country.
This was the first of two celebratory games, with the second played three days later at Twickenham between a Five Nations side and an Overseas Union side

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back to the historic clash between the British Lions and The Rest in 1986. As part of the International Rugby Football Board (IRFB) Centenary celebrations, these fierce competitors battled it out at Cardiff Arms Park, leaving spectators on the edge of their seats. The image captures a pivotal moment as John Jeffrey, Des Fitzgerald, and Jeff Whitefoot of the British Lions close in on The Rest's Tom Lawton. Tension fills the air as both teams demonstrate their unwavering determination and skill on the field. This match held even greater significance as it was intended to serve as a warm-up for the highly anticipated 1986 British Lions tour to South Africa. However, due to mounting controversy surrounding apartheid government policies in South Africa at that time, this tour was ultimately canceled. This decision cast a shadow over what could have been an unforgettable sporting event. Notably, this game marked only one of two celebratory matches held during this period. Three days later at Twickenham Stadium, another thrilling encounter took place between a Five Nations side and an Overseas Union side. Preserved by Colorsport Images photographer Colin Elsey, this remarkable snapshot encapsulates not only a significant moment in rugby history but also serves as a reminder of how sport can be intertwined with political events that shape our world.
