Eleven giant pyres of tusks were set alight Saturday as Kenya torched its vast ivory stockpile in a grand gesture aimed at shocking the world into stopping the slaughter of elephants. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this powerful photo print, a Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) ranger stands guard in front of illegal stockpiles of burning elephant tusks at Nairobi National Park. The image captures the dramatic moment when eleven giant pyres of tusks were set ablaze as Kenya made a bold statement against the slaughter of elephants. Taken on April 30,2016, by photographer Carl de Souza for Agence France-Presse (AFP), this photograph showcases the urgency and determination to end the ivory trade that threatens these majestic creatures with extinction. Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, who lit the fire himself, called for a total ban on ivory trade to combat what he described as "murderous" trafficking. The flames engulfing these seized tusks symbolize both destruction and hope. By destroying their vast ivory stockpile in such a grand gesture, Kenya aims to shock the world into action and put an end to this illicit trade. It serves as a reminder that every tusk represents an innocent life lost. This photo also highlights the bravery and dedication of KWS rangers who risk their lives daily to protect wildlife from poachers. Standing tall amidst billowing smoke and intense heat, this ranger embodies resilience in safeguarding Kenya's natural heritage. Through visual storytelling like this photograph, we are reminded of our responsibility to preserve Earth's biodiversity for future generations. Let it serve as a call-to-action against illegal wildlife trafficking and inspire us all to work towards a world where elephants roam freely
