Siamese or Conjoined twins Radica - Doodica
Siamese or Conjoined twins Radica - Doodica, also known as the Orissa sisters, who were joined at the chest (xiphopagus twins). Born in India in 1889, in 1893 they were purchased from their parents by the showman Captain Colman. In February 1902 they were separated as Doodica was suffering from Tuberculosis. Radica survived the operation but died from Tuberculosis the following year. The operation was performed by the French surgeon Eugene Louis Doyen (1859 - 1916). This print showcases the Siamese or Conjoined twins Radica and Doodica, also known as the Orissa sisters. Born in India in 1889, their extraordinary lives were marked by both tragedy and resilience. In 1893, they were acquired by showman Captain Colman from their parents and became a spectacle for audiences around the world. The engraving depicts the sisters clothed and standing together, showcasing how they were joined at the chest as xiphopagus twins. The illustration is taken from "Anomalies and Curiosities of Medicine" by George M Gould and Walter L Pyle, published in Philadelphia in 1900. In February 1902, tragedy struck when Doodica was diagnosed with Tuberculosis. To save her sister's life, a groundbreaking separation surgery was performed by French surgeon Eugene Louis Doyen (1859 - 1916). While Radica survived the operation, she succumbed to Tuberculosis the following year.
