EDITORS COMMENTS
Locomotive No. 4079, Pendennis Castle, is a stunning example of the iconic Castle class 4-6-0 steam locomotive that once ruled the rails of the Great Western Railway (GWR). This particular engine, built in 1923 at Swindon Works, is named after Pendennis Castle in Falmouth, Cornwall, a historic fortification overlooking the English Channel. The Castle class locomotives were designed by Sir Charles Collett, Chief Mechanical Engineer of the GWR, as improved versions of the earlier 4-6-0 Saint class engines. They were known for their power, efficiency, and elegant design, featuring a distinctive casing that concealed the machinery within. The locomotive's large boiler and Belpaire firebox provided ample steam power, while the long wheelbase ensured a smooth and stable ride. Pendennis Castle saw active service on the GWR lines, hauling passenger and freight trains throughout the region. Its distinctive livery of green and black, adorned with gold lining and intricate heraldic emblems, made it a proud and imposing sight on the rails. This photograph captures Pendennis Castle in all its glory, as it proudly stands at the STEAM Museum of the Great Western Railway in Swindon. The museum, which is home to an extensive collection of GWR locomotives and rolling stock, offers visitors a glimpse into the rich history of steam rail travel. The engine's preservation is a testament to the enduring appeal of these magnificent machines, which continue to captivate the imagination and inspire awe in generations of rail enthusiasts.
