View of the William Herschel Telescope

View of the 4.2 metre William Herschel Telescope at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory on La Palma, in the Canary Islands. Commissioned in 1987, and operated by the Royal Greenwich Observatory, the telescope has one of the largest primary mirrors in the world. The telescope is placed on an azimuthal mounting in which the telescope swings in azimuth around a vertical axis and in altitude about an horizontal axis. The observatory is located on the lip of an extinct volcano at an altitude of about 2400 metres

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the awe-inspiring William Herschel Telescope, standing tall at the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory on La Palma, in the Canary Islands. With its commissioning dating back to 1987 and being operated by the esteemed Royal Greenwich Observatory, this remarkable telescope boasts one of the largest primary mirrors in existence. The image captures not only the sheer size of this optical marvel but also highlights its unique mounting system. The telescope is situated on an azimuthal mounting, allowing it to gracefully swing in azimuth around a vertical axis while adjusting its altitude about a horizontal axis. This ingenious design enables astronomers and astrophysicists to explore celestial wonders with unparalleled precision. Perched atop an extinct volcano at an impressive altitude of approximately 2400 meters, the observatory provides an ideal vantage point for observing our vast universe. Its strategic location ensures minimal light pollution and atmospheric interference, offering scientists a pristine view into space. Science Photo Library has expertly captured this breathtaking scene that encapsulates humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge through astronomy. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing photograph print, we are reminded of both our curiosity about the cosmos and our dedication to unraveling its mysteries using cutting-edge technology like the William Herschel Telescope.
