Thomas Huxley, British biologist

Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-1895), British biologist. Huxley was a strong advocate of Darwins theory of evolution by natural selection. He was often its main supporter in scientific debates, as Darwin shunned publicity. Huxley famously spoke in support of the theory at a meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science in Oxford in 1860, where he opposed the anti-selectionist Bishop Wilberforce. Huxleys own research established that humans are primates. He also carried out valuable work on plankton

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Thomas Huxley, a prominent British biologist of the 19th century. Known for his unwavering support of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection, Huxley played a pivotal role in scientific debates as Darwin himself preferred to stay away from the limelight. The image captures Huxley leaning against a table, holding a book and displaying an air of confidence that befits his status as one of the theory's main advocates. In 1860, at a significant meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science in Oxford, Huxley delivered an impassioned speech defending Darwin's revolutionary ideas against Bishop Wilberforce and other critics who opposed natural selection. This event became particularly famous due to its clash between science and religion. Huxley's own research was groundbreaking; he established that humans are indeed primates and made valuable contributions to our understanding of plankton. His work on evolutionary biology solidified his place among history's most influential scientists. This historical illustration not only pays tribute to Huxley but also serves as a reminder of the immense impact he had on shaping our understanding of life on Earth. It is an artful representation that encapsulates both his intellectual prowess and dedication to advancing scientific knowledge in pursuit of truth.
