Portrait of Isaac Newton

Engraving of Isaac Newton (1642-1727), English scientist & mathematician. In 1687 Newton published Principia Mathematica in which he stated the three laws of mechanics describing the motion of a body. From these Newton was able to deduce the law of universal gravitation. The engraving is from Great Astronomers by Sir Robert S. Ball, FRS; published by Ibister & Co. London (1895)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable engraving of the esteemed Isaac Newton, an iconic figure in the realm of science and mathematics. Born in 1642, this English scientist and mathematician left an indelible mark on history with his groundbreaking discoveries. In 1687, Newton revolutionized our understanding of mechanics by publishing his seminal work Principia Mathematica. Within its pages, he unveiled three fundamental laws that elucidated the motion of objects. However, his genius did not stop there. Newton's insatiable curiosity led him to deduce the law of universal gravitation from these laws of mechanics. This profound revelation forever altered our comprehension of how gravity governs celestial bodies and shapes our universe. The engraving itself is a testament to Sir Robert S. Ball's Great Astronomers publication from 1895. Crafted with meticulous detail, it captures Newton's essence as a scholar whose brilliance transcended time. As we gaze upon this portrait, we are reminded not only of Newton's immense contributions but also his unwavering determination to unravel nature's mysteries. His legacy endures as a beacon for future generations who seek to push the boundaries of knowledge and explore the wonders that lie beyond our grasp.
