LM of mammary gland

Light micrograph of normal female breast (mammary gland) tissue from a non-pregnant woman, showing aggregations of glandular lobules. The lobules are the milk-secreting areas of the breast, each consists of an aggregate of branching ducts, called alveolar ducts, which end as blind-ended ductules. Compound alveolar cells (visible here as the central vertical band of lobular tissue) in the walls of the ducts are responsible for synthesis of milk. The alveolar duct epithelium proliferates during pregnancy under hormonal control (prolactin is a key hormone) in preparation for full-scale milk production after childbirth. Magnification: x200 at 35mm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate beauty of a normal female breast tissue, specifically the mammary gland. The image reveals clusters of glandular lobules, which are responsible for secreting milk in lactating women. Each lobule consists of a network of branching ducts known as alveolar ducts, terminating into blind-ended ductules. What makes this photograph truly remarkable is the presence of compound alveolar cells visible as a prominent vertical band within the lobular tissue. These specialized cells play a crucial role in synthesizing milk, making them essential for breastfeeding mothers. During pregnancy, under hormonal control and with prolactin being a key hormone involved, the alveolar duct epithelium undergoes proliferation to prepare for full-scale milk production after childbirth. This natural process ensures that newborns receive vital nourishment through their mother's milk. With a magnification level of x200 at 35mm size, this image provides an up-close view into one aspect of the complex reproductive system found within healthy female bodies. It serves as both an educational tool and an artistic representation highlighting the wonders of human anatomy. Science Photo Library has once again captured nature's marvel through this visually stunning print that celebrates life-giving capabilities and emphasizes our interconnectedness with the world around us.
