Kidneys. Illustration of the human kidneys

Illustration of the human kidneys. The arterial blood supply to the kidneys is through the renal arteries (red), which branch from the abdominal aorta. The renal veins drain deoxygenated blood from the kidneys into the inferior vena cava. Both these major blood vessels are seen to divide at bottom, forming the iliac arteries & veins that serve the legs. The surreal landscape in the lower part of the image is covered by parts of nephrons, the kidneys functional units. In each nephron, initial filtration of blood takes place in the renal corpuscles (gourd-like), with filtrate from each knot of blood capillaries collected by the surrounding Bowmans capsule (yellow)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty and complexity of the human kidneys. The illustration highlights the arterial blood supply to these vital organs, originating from the renal arteries branching out from the abdominal aorta. As depicted by vibrant red lines, this network of blood vessels ensures a continuous flow of oxygenated blood to nourish and support kidney function. In contrast, the deoxygenated blood is drained by the renal veins into the inferior vena cava, which can be seen dividing at the bottom of the image. This division gives rise to iliac arteries and veins that extend their services down towards our legs. The lower part of this artwork presents an awe-inspiring surreal landscape covered with parts of nephrons - tiny functional units within our kidneys responsible for filtration. Each nephron consists of gourd-like structures known as renal corpuscles where initial filtration occurs. Surrounding these corpuscles are Bowman's capsules depicted in yellow, collecting filtrate from each knot of blood capillaries. With its meticulous detail and vibrant colors, this illustration not only educates us about kidney anatomy but also emphasizes their crucial role in maintaining a healthy urinary system. It serves as a reminder that behind every bodily function lies an extraordinary world waiting to be explored.
