Egg cell, SEM

Egg cell. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a freeze-fracture of a developing egg cell in a secondary follicle of the ovary. At centre is the rounded egg cell or secondary oocyte (red). It is surrounded by granulosa cells that serve to nourish the egg during its developmental stages. Between granulosa cells a space develops called the follicular antrum, into which follicular fluid is secreted. This egg is still immature. The secondary follicle must develop into a graafian follicle before the egg is fully mature and ready to be released for fertilisation. Magnification: x1000 at 6x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of an egg cell, captured through a coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The image reveals a freeze-fracture of a developing egg cell in a secondary follicle of the ovary. At its center lies the rounded egg cell or secondary oocyte, depicted in vibrant red hues. Surrounding it are granulosa cells that play a vital role in nourishing and supporting the egg during its developmental stages. As we delve deeper into this microscopic world, we witness the emergence of a space known as the follicular antrum between these granulosa cells. This cavity serves as a reservoir for follicular fluid secreted to further aid in nurturing the growing egg. However, despite its mesmerizing appearance, this particular egg remains immature. To reach full maturity and be ready for fertilization, this secondary follicle must undergo transformation into what is known as a graafian follicle. Only then will this remarkable creation be released from its ovarian dwelling and embark on its journey towards potential conception. Through magnification at 1000 times with dimensions measuring 6x7cm, Science Photo Library has masterfully captured not only the anatomical intricacies but also the awe-inspiring wonder hidden within our own bodies' reproductive system.
