1833 Gideon Mantell Tilgate dinosaurs

" Strata of Tilgate Forest in Surrey" showing Gideon Mantell (seated) while two workmen excavate a partly exposed fossil (spine of Iguanodon?). The strata are labelled as: 1 Loam, 2 Sand and soft Sandstone, 3 Calciferous sandstone (fossil bearing), 4 Blue Clay or Marl. Drawn by F. Pollard, lithographed by P. Gauci, printed by Graf & Soret. From The Geology of the South East of England by Gideon Mantell, 1833, published by Longman, Rees, Orme and Brown of Paternoster Row. Gideon Mantell made some of the worlds first dinosaur discoveries here, including Iguanodon (1822) and Hylaeosaurus (1833). Quarry men would often keep specimens they found in the course of their work for his later inspection. Many of Mantells Tilgate specimens were vital in Richard Owens recognition and naming of the group Dinosauria

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1833, capturing a significant moment in the history of paleontology. Seated amidst the picturesque Tilgate Forest in Surrey is none other than Gideon Mantell, a renowned geologist and paleontologist of his time. The image showcases Mantell's unwavering passion for discovery as he overlooks two diligent workmen excavating what appears to be a partially exposed fossil, possibly the spine of an Iguanodon. The strata surrounding them are meticulously labeled: loam, sand and soft sandstone, calciferous sandstone (fossil-bearing), and blue clay or marl. This attention to detail reflects Mantell's scientific rigor and dedication to understanding Earth's ancient past. Mantell's groundbreaking contributions cannot be overstated; he made some of the world's first dinosaur discoveries right here at Tilgate Forest. His remarkable finds include Iguanodon in 1822 and Hylaeosaurus in 1833. Interestingly, quarry men often kept specimens they stumbled upon during their work for Mantell's expert examination. Many of these Tilgate specimens proved instrumental in Richard Owen's subsequent recognition and naming of the group Dinosauria. Thus, this humble scene captured by artist F. Pollard holds immense historical significance within the realms of both art and science. As we gaze upon this monochrome masterpiece by Paul D. Stewart from Science Photo Library, we are transported back to a time when dinosaurs were just beginning to emerge from their prehistoric slumber – thanks to visionaries like Gideon Mantell who dared to uncover their secrets hidden beneath layers of time.
