EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the majesty and power of HMS Eagle (R98) of the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm during the post-war era. Taken by the renowned Royal Air Force photographer, Charles E. Brown, the image showcases the aircraft carrier in full regalia, with a complement of Sea Hawk FB.11 jet fighters and Sea Dragon helicopters decked out in their vibrant colors and markings. HMS Eagle, commissioned in 1951, was the Royal Navy's first post-war aircraft carrier and the last of the Majestic-class carriers. Measuring 742 feet in length and displacing over 23,000 tons, she was a formidable presence on the high seas. Her flight deck, spanning over 900 feet, was capable of accommodating up to 40 aircraft, making her a vital asset in the defense of the United Kingdom and its global interests. The period depicted in this photograph marks a significant moment in the history of the Royal Navy and the Fleet Air Arm. The integration of jet aircraft into naval aviation marked a new era, offering increased speed, range, and firepower. The Sea Hawk FB.11, with its powerful Rolls-Royce Avon engines, was a testament to the technological advancements of the time. The helicopters, such as the Westland Sea Dragon, provided essential support to the carrier group, conducting search and rescue missions, anti-submarine warfare, and reconnaissance. With its impressive aircraft complement and versatile capabilities, HMS Eagle embodied the spirit of innovation and determination that characterized the post-war Royal Navy.
