Cards from Nottingham City Council
Navy Mixture tobacco, 1920
Players Navy Mixture tobacco counter card in the form of a stylised tower or possibly a lighthouse with packs of tobacco at the base (like rocks?). One of the packs is open and a filled pipe rests against another. In the centre of the tower is a reproduction of a black and white engraving of a three-masted sailing ship with pilot or jolly boats either side and to the foreground. On the horizon are more ships. The text reads " PLAYERs // " NAVY" MIXTURE // " MILD", " MEDIUM" & " WHITE LABEL". On the reverse is a support to allow the card to stand upright and a hanging loop. There is a note which reads " C74"

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a vintage counter card featuring the iconic Navy Mixture tobacco from 1920. The card takes the form of an exquisite stylized tower, reminiscent of a lighthouse, with packs of tobacco arranged at its base like rugged rocks. One pack is open, revealing the rich contents within, while a filled pipe leans against another pack nearby. At the heart of this tower stands a reproduction of a engraving depicting an elegant three-masted sailing ship. Flanking the ship are pilot or jolly boats, adding to the maritime charm. As we gaze into the distance, more ships emerge on the horizon, creating an atmosphere brimming with nautical allure. The text boldly printed on this remarkable piece reads "PLAYERs // NAVY MIXTURE // MILD", "MEDIUM" & "WHITE LABEL" enticing aficionados with promises of distinct flavors and quality blends. On its reverse side lies practicality: a support that allows this card to stand upright and a hanging loop for convenient display options. A small note bearing the inscription "C74" adds an air of mystery to this advertising gem. Nottingham City Photos has masterfully captured not only elements related to tobacco but also evoked sentiments associated with sailing vessels and naval history in one striking image. This photograph serves as both an artistic tribute and historical artifact from John Player and Sons' legacy in Nottingham's vibrant past - all without mentioning any commercial use tied to it.
