This handcolored copperplate engraving, titled "Vertumnus and Pomona with a Greek River God," is a stunning representation of the classical mythological tale of the god of seasons and weather, Vertumnus, and the goddess of fruit trees and gardens, Pomona. The image, engraved by Jacques Louis Constant Lacerf after illustrations by Leonard Defraine, is taken from the collection "Mythology in Prints, or Figures of Fabled Gods," published by Blanchard in Paris around 1820. In the print, Vertumnus, depicted as an older man with a flowing beard and wearing a toga, is shown disguised as an old farmer, attempting to win the heart of Pomona. The goddess, portrayed as a young woman with abundant fruit in her hands, is initially reluctant to give in to his advances. However, Vertumnus, using his powers, transforms himself into various forms, including a tree, a snake, and a shepherd, in an attempt to persuade Pomona to grant him a kiss. Eventually, she relents, and they are shown sharing a tender moment. The Greek river god, represented by a muscular figure with a flowing beard and holding a trident, adds an intriguing element to the scene. The presence of the river god may symbolize the connection between the changing seasons and the flow of water, which is essential for the growth of fruit trees and gardens.
