Tatler article featuring Alfred Lester and H G Pelissier

Article on page 39 of the Tatler, 13th October 1909, featuring comedians Alfred Lester and Harry Gabriel Pelissier smoking pipes and drinking from steins. Lesters gloomy stage persona was seen to its quintessential comic effect in the long-running musical The Arcadians (1909) in which he delivered optimistic lyrics in a lugubrious manner. Pelissier, however, looks decidedly unjolly even though his off-stage persona was the complete opposite. Date: 13th October 1909

EDITORS COMMENTS
Tatler's Comedic Duo: Alfred Lester and Harry Gabriel Pelissier, 13th October 1909 This photograph from the pages of the Tatler, published on the 13th of October 1909, features the celebrated comedic duo Alfred Lester and Harry Gabriel Pelissier. Seated in a cozy setting, the two men are seen sharing a moment of camaraderie, each holding a pipe in hand and a stein of beer at the ready. Alfred Lester, the melancholic comedian, gained fame for his gloomy stage persona that reached its zenith in the long-running musical "The Arcadians" (1909). Lester's unique comedic style was characterized by his lugubrious delivery of optimistic lyrics, which left audiences in stitches as they marveled at the irony of his demeanor. In stark contrast, Pelissier's off-stage persona was far from gloomy. Known for his jovial disposition, the comedian's unjolly appearance in this photograph is a delightful surprise. The image captures the intriguing dichotomy between the men's public and private personas, offering a glimpse into the complexities of their lives both on and off the stage. As the Edwardian era drew to a close, the comedic talents of Lester and Pelissier continued to captivate audiences with their unique brand of humor. This photograph serves as a testament to their enduring appeal and the lasting impact they left on the world of entertainment during a bygone era.
