EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1798, showcases an enchanting assembly of six distinct bird species: the Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica), Swift (Apus apus), House Martin (Delichon urbicum), Sand Martin (Riparia riparia), and Nightjar (Caprimulgus europaeus). The Barn Swallow, with its distinctive forked tail and glossy blue-black plumage, is perched gracefully at the center of the image. Two Swifts, with their slender bodies and long, pointed wings, can be seen in flight above, their agility and speed on full display. The House Martin and Sand Martin, both members of the swallow family, are depicted nesting in the eaves of a building, their bellies filled with mud for constructing their nests. The Nightjar, a nocturnal bird, is illustrated in its cryptic camouflage, blending seamlessly into the background. Its large, round eyes and distinctive, wide-open mouth are features that help it to catch insects in the dead of night. This beautiful and intricately detailed illustration offers a glimpse into the natural world of the late 18th century, showcasing the ornithological knowledge of the time while also capturing the imagination of young readers. The use of handcoloring adds a vibrant and lifelike quality to the engraving, making each bird stand out with its unique plumage and characteristics. This historical illustration is an invaluable resource for those interested in the history of ornithology and the natural world, as well as a stunning work of art in its own right.
