This stunning illustration is taken from Plate 57 of "Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium" or "The Metamorphosis of the Insects of Surinam" by the renowned German naturalist and artist, Maria Sibylla Merian. The plate, created in the early 17th century, showcases an intricate array of Surinam insects, with a particular focus on Lepidoptera, or butterflies and moths.
