This evocative photograph captures the intrepid spirit of William Rowland Ding (1885-1917), a pioneering figure in the early days of aviation as the chief test pilot for Blackburn Aircraft. Taken in 1914, the image shows Ding seated in the cockpit of a modified Handley Page G biplane, with a determined expression on his face and a scarf wrapped around his neck. The plane, with its distinctive wings and open-air design, was a common sight during the era of military aviation, and Ding's role as a test pilot placed him at the forefront of pushing the boundaries of what was possible in flight. Born in 1885, Ding began his aviation career in the Royal Flying Corps before joining Blackburn Aircraft in 1913. During his time with the company, he played a crucial role in the development and testing of numerous aircraft models, including the Blackburn R.E.8 and the Blackburn Kangaroo. Tragically, Ding lost his life in 1917 during a test flight of the Blackburn Kangaroo II, which crashed near Bournemouth, England.
