EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is a handcolored engraving of a portrait and profile of Chang and Eng Bunker, the famous Siamese Twins, and an Indian woman from Calcutta, taken from Charles d'Orbigny's Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle (Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris in 1849. Chang and Eng, who were born in Siam (now Thailand) in 1811, were joined at the chest and shared a liver and intestines. They gained international fame as they traveled extensively in Europe and the United States, often exhibiting themselves as a curiosity. In this portrait, Chang is depicted on the left with a serious expression and a headband adorned with feathers, while Eng, on the right, wears a more relaxed expression and sports a nose ring and earring. The Indian woman, aged 22, adds a vibrant contrast with her traditional attire, including a headpiece adorned with jewelry and a nose ring. The intricate details of their clothing and accessories are beautifully captured in this handcolored engraving by Fournier after an illustration by Verner. The image offers a fascinating glimpse into the diverse cultural exchange of the 19th century, showcasing the unique bond between Chang and Eng and the captivating beauty of the Indian woman.
