EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children), published in Weimar in 1798, showcases an intriguing assortment of freshwater fish species native to European waters. The engraving features six distinct fish: 1) Danube Gudgeon (Gobio gobio), 2) Bleak (Alburnus alburnus), 3) Spirlin (Alburnoides bipunctatus), 4) Minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus), 5) Prussian Carp (Carassius gibelio), and 6) an unidentified minnow species. The Danube Gudgeon, also known as the European Stone Loach, is a small, bottom-dwelling fish with a brownish-yellow body and dark spots. The Bleak, a common European fish, is easily recognizable by its silver coloration and dark lateral stripe. The Spirlin, or Two-spotted Minnow, boasts a slender body with two distinctive black spots, one on each side. The Minnow, or European Stone Minnow, is a small, brownish fish with a red or pink underside. The Prussian Carp, or White Amur, is a popular ornamental fish with a golden-brown body and distinctive black spots. This enchanting illustration serves as a testament to the rich biodiversity of European freshwater ecosystems and the intrigue they held for naturalists and children alike during the late 18th century. The meticulous attention to detail in the handcolouring and copperplate engraving techniques further adds to the allure of this image.
