EDITORS COMMENTS
In this chromolithograph illustration from "Tiere der Urwelt" (Animals of the Prehistoric World), published in Hamburg in 1910, we witness a thrilling encounter between two iconic dinosaurs of the Mesozoic Era: Megalosaurus and Iguanodon. The Megalosaurus, an extinct carnivorous theropod dinosaur of the Middle Jurassic period, is depicted with powerful limbs, a long, heavy tail, and a large head with sharp teeth. Its body is covered in intricately detailed scales, adding to the lifelike quality of the illustration. Across from Megalosaurus stands Iguanodon, an extinct genus of herbivorous dinosaur from the Cretaceous period. This large, herbivorous dinosaur is easily recognizable by its long neck, thumb spike, and bipedal stance. The illustration captures a moment of intense conflict between these two prehistoric behemoths. Megalosaurus lunges forward, its jaws wide open, teeth bared, as it attempts to take down the much larger Iguanodon. Iguanodon, in defense, raises its thumb spike, ready to strike back at its attacker. The vivid colors and intricate details in this illustration bring these ancient creatures to life, allowing us to imagine the world they once inhabited. This image is a testament to the rich history of dinosaur research and illustration. It is a reminder of the fascination that these ancient creatures continue to hold on our collective imagination and the importance of preserving and studying their remains to better understand our planet's biosphere.
