EDITORS COMMENTS
This oil painting depicts a significant moment in Spanish political history: the Opening of the Cortes at the Senate in Madrid on June 24, 1920. The scene is set at the entrance of the Senate Palace, with King Alfonso XIII (1886-1941) extending a regal salute to Antonio Maura y Montaner (1853-1925), the President of the Council of Ministers. Maura stands proudly, dressed in formal attire, as he prepares to enter the Senate with his fellow politicians. Maura, a prominent Spanish statesman and lawyer, served several terms as Prime Minister between 1897 and 1911, and again from 1914 to 1917. He is known for his conservative political views and his efforts to maintain the autonomy of the Spanish monarchy during a period of political instability. The painting, created by the renowned Spanish artist Maños Martínez (1861-1935), masterfully captures the grandeur and solemnity of the occasion. The use of vibrant colors and natural daylight creates a vivid and dynamic image, transporting us back to the bustling streets of Madrid over a century ago. The Opening of the Cortes was an important event in the political calendar, marking the beginning of a new legislative session and the opportunity for the government to present its policies to the Cortes Generales, the Spanish parliament. This painting offers a fascinating glimpse into the political landscape of Spain during a pivotal moment in its history, and serves as a testament to the enduring power of art to capture and preserve the past.
