EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolor print, created by the renowned English artist Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins in the late 19th century, showcases four remarkable marine reptiles that once roamed the Jurassic seas approximately 150 million years ago. The illustration features an Ichthyosaurus, a fish-like reptile with a streamlined body and a large, melon-shaped head, characterized by its long, tooth-filled jaws. The second creature is a Plesiosaurus, easily identified by its elongated neck and four flipper-like limbs. The third reptile, Stenosaurus, is a close relative of the Ichthyosaurus, but with a more slender body and a shorter snout. The fourth marine reptile, though less distinct in this image, appears to be a member of the Crocodylia, or crocodile lineage, with a long, powerful tail and a distinctive, bony skull. Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins, a pioneer in the field of prehistoric animal reconstruction, meticulously studied the anatomy of these ancient creatures to create accurate and lifelike illustrations. His work was groundbreaking in its attention to detail and its ability to bring these long-extinct animals to life for the public. The intricate details of their anatomy, from their eyes to their fins, are beautifully rendered in this watercolor, providing a window into the world of the Jurassic period. The rich colors and vibrant hues add to the captivating allure of these ancient marine inhabitants, transporting us back in time to a world long gone.
