EDITORS COMMENTS
Heinrich, Count von Bruhl (1700-1763): A German Statesman of the 18th Century This beautifully colored engraving depicts Heinrich von Bruhl, a prominent German statesman of the 18th century. Born in Saxony, Bruhl rose to prominence in the courts of Poland and Saxony, becoming a favorite of King Augustus III of Poland and Elector of Saxony. The image captures Bruhl in the interior of his study, surrounded by the trappings of power and learning. The room is adorned with ornate furnishings, including a grand fireplace, a large table laden with documents, and a well-stocked bookshelf. Bruhl himself is shown standing, dressed in the fashion of the time with an impressive wig and a formal coat. Bruhl's political career was marked by his close relationship with King Augustus III, who appointed him as his Chancellor and Prime Minister of Poland in 1733. Bruhl played a key role in Polish and Saxon politics for over three decades, implementing various reforms and maintaining alliances with European powers. Despite his successes, Bruhl's tenure was not without controversy. He was accused of corruption and nepotism, and his policies were criticized by some as being too pro-Austrian. Nevertheless, Bruhl remained a powerful figure in European politics until his death in 1763. This engraving, which is part of "The Universal History" published in 1885, provides a fascinating glimpse into the life of a 18th-century statesman and the opulent surroundings of his study. The rich colors and intricate details of the image bring Bruhl and his world to life, making it a valuable historical document as well as an aesthetic pleasure.
