EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the intense focus and unyielding determination of George Henry Thomas, a pivotal figure in American military history. Born on March 31, 1816, in Lynchburg, Virginia, Thomas rose through the ranks to become one of the Union Army's most respected commanders during the Civil War. Known as the 'Rock of Chickamauga,' Thomas gained renown for his unwavering leadership during the Battle of Chickamauga in September 1863. Facing overwhelming Confederate forces, Thomas held his ground and prevented the Union Army from being completely routed. His steadfast resistance bought precious time for the Union troops to regroup and eventually turn the tide of the battle. Thomas's military career began in 1834 when he joined the United States Army as a second lieutenant. He served in various capacities, including as an engineer and quartermaster, before being commissioned as a brevet major general in 1862. Thomas's strategic mind and unwavering commitment to his men earned him the respect of his peers and the admiration of his soldiers. Despite his successes, Thomas faced criticism and controversy throughout his career. Some believed that his cautious approach to battle and reluctance to take risks hindered the Union war effort. However, Thomas remained steadfast in his beliefs and continued to serve his country with distinction. He retired from the military in 1868 and passed away on March 28, 1870. This image of George Henry Thomas, taken during his later years, serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience and determination that defined his military career. Thomas's legacy as a Union commander and his role in the Battle of Chickamauga continue to be celebrated in American history.
