The artwork is part of the Large Series plate 47 from the John Reeves Collection of Zoological Drawings from Canton, China, created during the nineteenth century. John Reeves (1774-1853), a British merchant and naturalist, amassed an impressive collection of over 2,000 watercolours and drawings of Chinese birds and animals. The Golden Pheasant, native to the mountainous regions of western China, is renowned for its vibrant golden feathers adorning its nape and long, flowing green and gold plumes on its back. In this illustration, the bird is perched gracefully, displaying its distinctive face with a bright red wattle, blue-green collar, and piercing yellow eyes.
