This print showcases the artwork titled "Study Triton recto Anatomical Studies ? verso" by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Created in 1642-43, this piece of art is a rough and hasty sketch that effectively conveys the stance and action of a triton rising from the sea. The triton raises a huge shell to his lips, capturing the moment depicted in Ovid's Metamorphoses when Neptune summoned him to sound his horn and make the waters retreat after a flood. Measuring 14 5/16 x 9 5/8 inches (364 x 245 cm), this drawing features red chalk with an almost imperceptible pale brown wash as its background tint. Framing lines drawn with pen and brown ink add depth to the composition. Gian Lorenzo Bernini, an Italian sculptor born in Naples in 1598 and active in Rome, was one of the great figures of Baroque art. The skillful use of various artistic techniques brings this study to life, despite its rough appearance. The dynamic pose and expressive details capture both the power and grace associated with mythological creatures like tritons.
