EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to April 1929, capturing the essence of Newington Mill in all its glory. Nestled in the picturesque village of Newington, Ramsgate, Thanet, Kent, this historic smock mill stands tall against the backdrop of a clear blue sky. The image showcases both the smock mill itself and an adjacent chimney that served as a testament to its industrial past. Built in 1830, Newington Mill had undergone significant changes by the time this photograph was taken. The once majestic sails that powered it had not been used since around 1904; instead, it relied on a gas engine to drive its roller flour mill operations. Despite these alterations over time, the charm and grandeur of this Georgian-era structure remain intact. Its architectural beauty is evident through every meticulously crafted detail - from its traditional design to its towering presence against the landscape. Sadly, as progress marched forward relentlessly into modernity, Newington Mill met its demise circa 1960 when it was ultimately demolished. However fleeting its existence may have been after this snapshot froze it in time forevermore, we are fortunate to have Francis Matthew Shea's lens immortalize this piece of history for future generations to appreciate. As we gaze upon this remarkable image today, let us reflect on how our world has evolved while cherishing these glimpses into our collective pasts - reminders of where we came from and what shaped us into who we are today.
