The house was purchased in 1754 as the first home of the British Museum and in 1757 the gardens were opened to the public, two years before visitors were admitted to the Museums collections. The seventeenth-century building was gradually replaced by the present Museum buildings between 1823 and 1852

Originally purchased in 1754 as the first home of the British Museum, this stately building holds great historical significance. In 1757, its gardens were opened to the public, making it a popular destination even before visitors were allowed access to the museum's collections. The symmetrical design of Montagu House is showcased beautifully in this image, highlighting its architectural elegance.
