Mingrelian. Guriits, 1862. Creator: Frants Taikhel

Mingrelian. Guriits, 1862. Sheet 27 from the album "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie", volume 1. Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie (Ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia) is a two-volume work published in Saint Petersburg in 1862 to mark the millennium of the founding of the Russian Empire (traditionally traced to the founding of the state of Kievan Rus in 862). The work is dedicated to Tsar Alexander II. Volume 1 consists of 62 colored illustrations depicting ethnic groups from across the Russian Empire in their traditional dress. This volume also includes a fold-out table listing the different ethnic groups and the size of their populations in the cities in the empire, as well as a colored-coded ethnographic map that shows which groups inhabited which parts of the empire. Volume 2 is all text, and consists of detailed essays, in French, about the ethnic groups of the empire, their history, culture, language, and so forth, -which reflect the state of anthropological and historical knowledge of the 1860s. The book is the work of Gustav-Fedor Pauli (1817-67), a German ethnographer who immigrated to Russia

Mingrelian Guriits, 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating ethnographic portrait captured by the skilled lens of Frants Taikhel for the seminal work "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie" (Ethnographic description of the peoples of Russia). Published in Saint Petersburg in 1862, this two-volume set was commissioned by Tsar Alexander II to mark the millennium of the Russian Empire. The work, authored by the esteemed German ethnographer Gustav-Fedor Pauli, aimed to document and preserve the diverse cultural heritage of the Russian Empire's myriad ethnic groups. This evocative image, taken from Volume 1, showcases the Mingrelian Guriits, an ethnic group hailing from the western part of the Georgian region. The meticulously detailed photograph captures the intricacies of their traditional attire, which includes a long, flowing tunic, a wide belt, and a distinctive headdress adorned with intricate silver ornaments. The vivid colors and textures of their clothing, as well as the expressive gaze of the subject, transport us back in time to a bygone era. The "Description ethnographique des peuples de la Russie" was a groundbreaking work for its time, featuring 62 colored illustrations of various ethnic groups, a fold-out table listing their populations, and a colored-coded ethnographic map. Volume 2, consisting entirely of text, delved deeper into the history, culture, and language of each group, reflecting the state of anthropological and historical knowledge in the 1860s. This photograph of the Mingrelian Guriits stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage that was documented and preserved through this pioneering ethnographic endeavor.
