EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print depicts the Bombardment of Bomarsund during the Aland War in 1854. The image captures the moment as British and French naval forces bombarded military and civilian facilities on the coast of the Grand Duchy of Finland, during the larger Crimean War. In the foreground, the second round fort, also known as Long Fort, with its impressive 80 guns, is clearly visible. Two British warships, "Odin" and "Hecla," are anchored in the background, their cannons pointed towards the fort. The scene is described in an article from the "Illustrated London News" published in 1854. According to the account, the ships' companies were called to quarters at 1 p.m. and cleared for action, with men remaining at their guns, ready to engage any enemy riflemen. At 4:45 p.m., after supper, the men were called back to their quarters. Unfortunately, during this time, a man from the "Odin" fell overboard. Despite the slow speed of the ship and every effort made to save him, the man met a tragic end. The losses on board the British ships were reportedly very slight, with only one man wounded on the "Hecla," and none on the "Valorous," while the "Odin" sustained two wounded men, neither of whom were seriously injured. The photograph provides a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a visual representation of the intense military action that took place during the Bombardment of Bomarsund. The image, though unsigned, is a testament to the historical significance of this event and the bravery of the soldiers involved.
