EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a woodcut after a stone relief on the grave of Agnes Bernauer, an intriguing figure from medieval history. Agnes Bernauer was not only the lover but also possibly the first wife of Bavarian Duke Albrecht III during the 15th century. However, their forbidden connection brought them into conflict with Albrecht's father, Ernest. Tragically, in 1435, Agnes met her untimely demise when she was drowned in the Danube River by Albrecht himself. Her life and death have since become subjects of numerous literary works that explore this tumultuous love affair. The woodcut beautifully captures the essence of this historical event and is published here from an archive dating back to 1880. The intricate details carved into the tombstone at St. Peters Cemetery in Straubing add depth and emotion to this engraving by ZU_09. As we delve into this ethnocultural history piece, we are transported back to a time when love defied societal norms and tragic consequences followed suit. This vertical image allows us to immerse ourselves in German culture during the Middle Ages while contemplating themes of power, love, and sacrifice. Whether you are drawn to medieval history or appreciate fine artistry, this print offers a thought-provoking glimpse into a significant chapter in European history - one that continues to captivate audiences centuries later.
