Philae island (Egypt), by Ernst Weidenbach (1818-1882), lithograph, published 1861
Philae island - by Ernst Weidenbach (German painter, 1818-1882). Philae is an ancient temple complex of Greco-Roman times about 8 km south of Aswan on Lake Nasser in southern Egypt. Todays location of the temple complex is no longer the original island of Philae, as it has sunk in Lake Nasser. In the 1960s the temple was relocated to the island Agilkia. It is a Unesco World Heritage Site. Orignal lithograph from my archive, published in 1861

EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph, created by Ernst Weidenbach in 1861, transports us to the enchanting Philae island in Egypt. The print showcases the remarkable beauty of this ancient temple complex, which was built during Greco-Roman times and is located approximately 8 km south of Aswan on Lake Nasser. Philae island holds a significant place in history and culture. Once situated on its original island, it now rests beneath the waters of Lake Nasser due to its submersion. However, thanks to a monumental effort in the 1960s, the temple complex was relocated to Agilkia Island where it stands today as a testament to human ingenuity and preservation. The image depicts an engraved representation of Isis, the Egyptian goddess associated with fertility and motherhood. Her presence adds an air of mystique and spirituality to this already awe-inspiring scene. The intricate details captured by Weidenbach's lithograph highlight not only his artistic talent but also serve as a visual time capsule for future generations. As we gaze upon this historical gem from Fine Art Storehouse's archive, we are reminded that art has the power to transport us across time and space. This UNESCO World Heritage Site serves as a reminder of our rich cultural heritage and invites us to explore the wonders that lie within Egypt's ancient past.
