EDITORS COMMENTS
The print showcases Sir Julius Vogel, a prominent figure in New Zealand's history. This engraving, originally featured in The Illustrated London News on July 3rd, 1875, captures the essence of Vogel's influential role as the Prime Minister of New Zealand during the years 1873-75. Sir Julius Vogel was known for his ambitious vision and determination to transform New Zealand through massive public works and immigration. In order to achieve this goal, he borrowed a substantial sum of 10 million pounds to construct roads, railways, and telegraphs across the country. Additionally, he established state life insurance in 1869 and introduced the Public Trust Office in 1872. Notably progressive for his time, Sir Julius Vogel also championed women's suffrage by introducing the first Women's Suffrage Bill to Parliament. Although suffrage was not granted until several years later in 1893, his efforts laid an important foundation for future advancements towards gender equality. This portrait depicts Sir Julius Vogel as a distinguished gentleman with a full beard that exudes wisdom and authority. His Jewish heritage is also evident in this image. As we admire this historic photograph print from Fine Art Finder's private collection today, we are reminded of Sir Julius Vogel's significant contributions to shaping New Zealand into what it is today - a nation built upon infrastructure development and social progressiveness under visionary leadership.
