EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of religious devotion and artistic mastery. Titled "The Trinity with the Virgin, Saints John the Evangelist, Stephen and Lawrence and a Donor" this 1479 oil on panel masterpiece by Peter Hemmel is an awe-inspiring representation of Christian faith. At the center of the composition, God the Father sits enthroned, holding Christ on the cross. The Holy Spirit hovers between them in dove form, symbolizing their divine unity as the Holy Trinity. This central doctrine of Christianity is beautifully depicted in intricate detail. The altarpiece was specifically designed for a kneeling donor, a cleric seeking penance and salvation. His plea for redemption is inscribed on a scroll held by Saint John while Saint Stephen stands protectively over him with stones of martyrdom adorning his head. The style reflects influences from stained glass artistry produced by Peter Hemmel von Andlau Workshop. Its late Gothic aesthetic adds to its ethereal beauty. Displayed at J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, USA, this recently discovered artwork showcases not only exceptional craftsmanship but also deep spiritual significance. It serves as a visual reminder of core biblical teachings such as sacrifice and salvation found within Christianity. With its rich symbolism and profound religious themes, this painting invites viewers to contemplate their own faith journey while marveling at Hemmel's skillful brushwork.
