EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a tapestry fragment from an altar frontal or antependium, believed to be from Nuremberg and created between 1460-70. Measuring 80x149 cm, this linen and wool masterpiece is housed in the Burrell Collection in Glasgow, Scotland. The tapestry depicts two prominent saints - St Pancras and St Gotthard. On the left stands St Pancras, adorned in a surcoat over his armor, clutching a dagger and staff with utmost determination. Meanwhile, on the right side of the tapestry stands St Gotthardus, Bishop of Hidesheim. He wears a majestic mitre and cloak while holding a crozier, sudarium (a cloth used for wiping sweat), and even a small model of a church. The background of this incredible artwork imitates crimson red voided velvet silk with an intricate ferronnerie pattern that resembles metalwork. At the center bottom are coats of arms belonging to Haller and Prunsterer families. This exquisite tapestry fragment not only showcases exceptional textile weaving skills but also provides insight into religious iconography during the 15th century German School period. The attention to detail in depicting these saints' attributes adds depth to their symbolism within Christian religion. With its rich history and stunning craftsmanship preserved through this print by Bridgeman Images, viewers can appreciate both the artistry involved in creating such masterpieces as well as gain glimpses into medieval religious practices.
