Heavy Cavalry Officers Service Sword, 1808-18 (steel with wood & leather grip)
1268361 Heavy Cavalry Officers Service Sword, 1808-18 (steel with wood & leather grip) by English School, (19th century); National Army Museum, London; (add.info.: Pattern 1796. Carried by Capt (later Lt Col) William Tyrwhitt Drake (1785-1848), Royal Horse Guards. Straight, flat backed, double edged with a hatchet blade. Wooden grip bound with cord and covered with leather. Wrought iron or steel ladder guard, broadened out at the base into a pear shaped disc with a reinforcing inside plate, and engraved with the owners name. An affectation of many Household Cavalry officers was that their swords remained in bare metal, without makers names or regimental inscriptions. This print showcases the Heavy Cavalry Officers Service Sword, a remarkable piece of weaponry from the early 19th century. Crafted with steel, wood, and leather grip, this sword represents the epitome of elegance and power. The sword belonged to Captain William Tyrwhitt Drake, later promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in the Royal Horse Guards during his illustrious military career. Its design features a straight, flat-backed double-edged blade with a hatchet-like shape that exudes strength and precision. One distinctive aspect is its wooden grip intricately bound with cord and covered in supple leather for enhanced handling.
