Willie wagtail perching on branch

The Willie Wagtail is the largest, and most well-known, of the Australian fantails. The plumage is black above with a white belly. It can be distinguished from other similar-sized black and white birds by its black throat and white eyebrows and whisker marks. The name wagtail stems from the constant sideways wagging of the tail. Young birds resemble the adults, but have paler, slightly rusty edges to the feathers of the wings

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the graceful beauty of a Willie Wagtail perched delicately on a branch. As the largest and most well-known member of the Australian fantails, this bird's striking plumage is characterized by its black upper body contrasting with a pristine white belly. What sets it apart from other similar-sized black and white birds are its distinctive features: a jet-black throat, elegant white eyebrows, and charming whisker marks. The name "wagtail" perfectly captures one of this avian species' endearing traits - their constant sideways wagging tail motion. This unique behavior adds to their charm and makes them easily recognizable in their natural habitat. Even as young birds, they bear resemblance to adults but possess slightly paler feathers with subtle rusty edges along their wings. Through Lance H. Bates' expert lens, this photograph encapsulates the essence of Australia's wildlife diversity while highlighting the remarkable attributes of the Willie Wagtail. Its poised stance on that branch speaks volumes about its confidence and adaptability in navigating various environments across the continent. As we admire this stunning image captured in 2009, let us appreciate not only Bates' artistic talent but also recognize how nature continually mesmerizes us with its awe-inspiring creations like these charismatic Australian fantails.
