Police, armed with truncheons, clashed with strikers at the Barbican building site

Police, armed with truncheons, clashed with strikers at the Barbican building site. It happened after Mytons, the contractors, brought in new workers in a bid to re - open the 5 and a half million pound site in the City.
Strikers threw themselves on vans carrying the workers, hammering on windows and doors and shouting abuse.
Further ugly scenes broke out during a mass meeting of the strikers.
Photo shows; Lou Lewis, communist leader of the unofficial strike committee, addressing a mass meeting outside the Barbican site today.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this powerful photo print, taken in the heart of 1960s London, tensions between police and striking workers at the Barbican building site are palpable. Armed with truncheons, the police clash with determined strikers who have thrown themselves onto vans carrying new workers brought in by Mytons contractors to reopen the multimillion-pound site. The atmosphere is charged as strikers hammer on windows and doors while shouting their discontent. Amidst these chaotic scenes, a pivotal moment is captured: Lou Lewis, leader of the unofficial strike committee and a prominent communist figure, stands before a mass meeting outside the Barbican site. His commanding presence demands attention as he addresses his fellow strikers passionately. It is clear that this gathering serves as both a platform for unity among workers and an opportunity to voice their grievances against unfair labor practices. This photograph encapsulates not only the intense clashes between pickets and law enforcement but also highlights the resilience of unionized workers fighting for their rights during a tumultuous era. As we observe this historic image from over half a century ago, it serves as a reminder of how far worker's rights have come while acknowledging that there is still work to be done in ensuring fair treatment within our society today.
