Z355 / 0126

Scanning electron micrograph of a newly emerged caterpillar among a batch of hatching eggs of the large white butterfly, Pieris brassicae, on the undersurface of a nasturtium leaf. The eggs are laid in large groups on the leaves of Crucifer crops such as cabbage, broccoli, swedes etc. These eggs were laid at the end of August; the larvae hatch in a few days. They overwinter as pupae & emerge as butterflies in May. The young caterpillars (larvae) feed exclusively on the cuticle of the leaf until after the first moult, when the diet expands to include the whole leaf. The voracious appetite of these pests can lead to the defoliation of a crop. Mag:X96 (10x8)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of a newly emerged caterpillar amidst a cluster of hatching eggs belonging to the majestic large white butterfly, scientifically known as Pieris brassicae. The delicate scene unfolds on the undersurface of a vibrant nasturtium leaf, where these eggs are commonly laid in sizable groups on Crucifer crops like cabbage, broccoli, and swedes. Photographed at the end of August, these tiny larvae will hatch within days and spend their winter months as pupae before transforming into beautiful butterflies come May. In their early stages, these young caterpillars exhibit an exclusive diet preference for consuming only the cuticle layer of the leaf. However, after undergoing their first moult, they expand their culinary repertoire to include devouring entire leaves. While this natural phenomenon is awe-inspiring from a scientific standpoint, it also sheds light on an unfortunate reality: these voracious pests can pose significant threats to crop health due to their insatiable appetite. Their feeding habits have been known to cause defoliation in agricultural settings. The scanning electron micrograph captured by Science Photo Library magnifies this enchanting moment by 96 times (10x8), allowing us to appreciate every minute detail of nature's wonders. It serves as a reminder that even seemingly small creatures play vital roles in our ecosystem and warrant our attention and understanding.
