Telegraph printer, 1889 C013 / 8777
Telegraph printer. 19th-century artwork of a telegraph printer developed by Moore and Wright in the 1880s. The electric telegraph had been developed in the 1830s and 1840s, but previously had been printed on narrow strips of paper. This invention allowed columnar printing on sheets or rolls of paper, as seen here. This was known as a column-printing telegraph. In 1890, Moore and Wrights patent was sold for GBP 30, 000. Artwork from the 4th volume (second period of 1889) of the French popular science weekly La Science Illustree

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of 19th-century technology - the Telegraph printer developed by Moore and Wright in the late 1880s. Prior to this invention, electric telegraphs were printed on narrow strips of paper, but this groundbreaking creation revolutionized the industry by enabling columnar printing on sheets or rolls of paper. The intricate artwork captures the essence of this historical invention, displaying its mechanical intricacies and technological advancements. The Telegraph printer depicted here is a testament to human ingenuity during an era defined by rapid scientific progress. Originally featured in La Science Illustree, a popular French science weekly publication, this illustration from their annual volume transports us back to a time when communication was undergoing transformative changes. It serves as a reminder that even in our digital age, we owe much to these early pioneers who laid the foundation for modern telecommunications. Intriguingly, Moore and Wright's patent for this innovative device was eventually sold for an impressive sum of GBP 30,000 in 1890. This not only highlights its significance but also underscores its commercial value during that period. As we gaze upon this monochrome masterpiece capturing the beauty of Victorian-era technology, it sparks curiosity about how far we have come since then while reminding us to appreciate those who paved the way for our interconnected world today.
