Saturns interior, artwork

Saturns interior. Computer artwork showing the interior structure of the planet Saturn. Usually, Saturn and Jupiter are known as gas giants, but they are not made entirely of gas. Saturn is composed of 96% hydrogen, 3% helium and 1% other elements, but these are just gaseous in the atmosphere (beige), which is about 1000 km thick. Below the atmosphere is a layer of liquid hydrogen and helium about 30, 000 km thick (light blue), located above another layer of metallic hydrogen (dark blue) about 15, 000 km thick. There is thought to be a rocky core (sphere, centre), with a radius of about 12, 000 km, at the centre of the planet

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning artwork captures the intricate interior structure of Saturn, one of our solar system's gas giants. Contrary to popular belief, these massive planets are not entirely composed of gas. Saturn is predominantly made up of 96% hydrogen, 3% helium, and 1% other elements. However, these elements exist in a gaseous state within its beige-colored atmosphere that spans approximately 1000 km. Beneath this atmospheric layer lies a fascinating world hidden from view. A vast expanse of liquid hydrogen and helium extends for about 30,000 km in light blue hues. Further below rests another layer known as metallic hydrogen depicted in dark blue tones spanning around 15,000 km. At the heart of this celestial marvel lies a rocky core resembling a spherical shape with an estimated radius measuring about 12,000 km. This central core acts as the foundation upon which Saturn's complex layers rest. The captivating image showcases the planet against a black background accentuating its layered composition and highlighting its distinct features. The mesmerizing rings encircling Saturn add to its allure while reminding us of the immense beauty present throughout our universe. Carlos Clarivan skillfully brings together artistry and scientific accuracy in this illustration that invites viewers to explore beyond what meets the eye—a glimpse into Saturn's enigmatic interior structure that continues to captivate astronomers and enthusiasts alike.
