Photo Prints from Science Photo Library
Mitosis in root tip of Broad Bean, LM
Light micrograph (longitudinal section) of the cells in the root tip of a broad bean plant Vicia faba. The dark spot in the centre of each cell is the nucleus. Most of those seen are in interphase, when little activity may be observed. Some, however, are in the process of mitosis, a type of cell division. The chromosomes in the nuclei contract and separate prior to division. Examples of anaphase can be seen at the edge of the slightly lighter central portion of the section. Magnification x200 at 35mm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate process of mitosis in the root tip of a Broad Bean plant, scientifically known as Vicia faba. Through a light micrograph, we are granted a glimpse into the fascinating world of cell division. The image reveals a longitudinal section of cells within the root tip, with each cell's nucleus prominently displayed as a dark spot at its center. While most cells appear to be in interphase, exhibiting minimal activity, some are actively undergoing mitosis. This crucial stage involves the contraction and separation of chromosomes within the nuclei before division occurs. Notably, on closer inspection towards the slightly lighter central portion of the section, examples of anaphase can be observed. These instances capture chromosomes moving towards opposite ends as they prepare for further cellular division. With a magnification level set at x200 and captured on 35mm film size by Science Photo Library, this photograph offers botany enthusiasts and researchers alike an invaluable resource for studying plant cells' behavior during mitosis. It serves as a reminder that even at microscopic levels, nature never ceases to amaze us with its intricacy and beauty.
